This guide will tell you how to recolour animals for Zoo Tycoon. To show you how to recolour animals I will do an example of a blue wolf and then you should be able to recolour an animal yourself. I will tell you how to make a blue wolf and then you should be able to make whatever recolour you want.

To recolour animals you will need the following programs: PSP7 (or another good art program), APE and WinZip (I use version 8.1). Once you have these programs you will be ready to start recolouring animals.

1 Ok, to start off with you need to start a new project in APE. Start a new Gray Wolf project.

Posted by: James 24 Aug. 9 2003, 01:27 AM
2 Now that you have an open Gray Wolf project go onto the animations panel and save one of the animations in .PNG or .BMP format.

3 Next open up your art program so that you can change the colour of the animation that you just saved. Change it so it looks blue. In PSP7 go to ‘colors’ and then ‘colorize’.

4 Now once you have finished colouring the animation save it. Go back into APE and bring up the generals panel. Go to where it says icon. There is a little folder next to it. Press it and browse to where you have the coloured animation of the Gray Wolf.

5 Save the animal you are working on. For now call it bluewolf1.ztd

6 Once you have saved the animal you may close APE. Browse to where you saved the animal. Right click on the file and go to ‘open with’. Then select WinZip.

7 Just click through and you should get presented with a folder with the name ‘animals’.

Posted by: James 24 Aug. 9 2003, 01:31 AM
8 Open the ‘animals’ folder up and the next folder, which should have a name, comprised of random numbers and letter like this one.

NB: Your name will differ because this is the animal ID.

9 Now open that folder and open the ‘icwolf’ folder. Inside that folder there should be 4 files. You should be able to see one called ‘N.pal’. Copy and Paste the ‘N.pal’ file into the same folder.

Posted by: James 24 Aug. 9 2003, 01:33 AM
10 Now the folder should have the four original files and the ‘copy of N.pal’. Now right click on the ‘copy of N.pal’ and rename it. Rename it to ‘graywolf.pal’. The right click on it again and ‘cut’ it.

11 Go back one folder so you are in the folder that has the name made up of the random numbers and letters. Paste the file into this folder. It should ask you whether you want replace the existing file with the new one. Accept it.

NB: When making other animals the file you are replacing contains the name that you need to rename the ‘N.pal’ file to, hence it asking if you want to overwrite it.

12 Now, go back two folders so you can see the icon to the ‘animals’ folder. Right click on it and go into WinZip option. Select ‘add to animals.zip’.

Posted by: James 24 Aug. 9 2003, 01:35 AM
13 Rename the ‘animals.zip’ file to ‘animals.ztd’. It will ask you whether you want to change the file extension. Click yes. Rename the ‘animals.ztd’ to ‘bluewolf.ztd’ or anything you want as long as you have the .ztd ending.

Now, open the file up in APE to see the final result.
