State of Identity

May 28th, 2011 | Posted by pftq in Thought of the Day | #
Gone are the days when one would try to learn from the successful. Now we have those who turn a blind eye to the solution, embrace their problems with pride, and become one with their failures.

Void

May 10th, 2011 | Posted by pftq in Essays | #
     I fear boredom.  I don't know why.  It's just the way it is.  I should be happy that my two hardest classes are now over, but I instead feel empty.  I should look forward to a fun trip I've been planning this month, but I realize that once it passes (or even in the midst of it), there will be nothing but a void.

     I can't help feeling similar to Jonathan Shields in "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952).  It has haunted me ever since I watched it two years ago for a film class.  Of course, I will never betray anyone for any means, but like Shields, once a project or goal is finished, I don't feel satisfied at all.  Instead, I feel anguish and longing - like I have just lost purpose and have suddenly been reduced to nothing.  I can be anything and do anything, but once I stop, I sink away into the shadows.

     It is not as if I pursue a goal or task because I enjoy it either.  It...[More]

Fixing Slow Print Dialogue with Epson

April 4th, 2011 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
Ran into this problem earlier today when printing from Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.  Basic symptoms are that the print dialogue takes almost a minute to pop up and then any navigation through the options is very slow.  The printer settings also do not show current ink levels.

It turns out this problem can be fixed by simply deleting the following file:
C:\ProgramData\Epson\Printer there is a file called EPAUDF01.AUD

The file is normally supposed to be very small but this problem occurs when the file somehow builds up over 1 MB or more.

More details found through some digging here:

IE8 CSS Backgrounds on A:Hover

March 20th, 2011 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
This is an odd bug, but if you try to specify a background for a link on hover (a:hover), the background may not take effect in Internet Explorer 8.  Fortunately it is an easy fix but not very obvious.

Basically make sure to specify the background in the non-hover state; if there is none, then set it to transparent.  Your CSS would then look like this:

a {
background-color:transparent;
}
a:hover {
background-color:#CCC; /* or whatever color you want */
}

Hopefully this saves some time for someone out there.  It took a while of playing around to finally get it working but ah well. Tongue

Using Mirrors to Decrease Projector Throw Ratio

January 11th, 2011 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
     Been doing a lot of work with pocket projectors lately.  One problem I've run into with them is the throw length.  It's no fun having something portable if you still need a lot of space to do any projecting.  So I did some experimenting with mirrors to see if I can "simulate" the extra distance for the projector without actually using much space. Cheesy
