Butterfly

What do you think of when you hear the word butterfly? Something beautiful right? A fantastical creature, colorful, magnificent... Why? Have you ever seen a butterfly? It is freakishly ugly! In fact, it's terrifying! It's like an ant with leaves attached!

And even the leaves attached to it can sometimes be frightening.  Some butterflies camouflage themselves to look like dark, soulless eyes staring right back at you.  How is that beautiful?

Then let's not also forget how butterflies first start out when they're born.  Let's start with some perspective - most things when first born are ... eh... *socially perceived* as cute and cuddly.  Think of kittens, puppies, and even chickens.  Now think of baby butterflies.  They're not tiny butterflies with a bit of cuteness attached.  They're practically worms with legs.

Fine, so butterflies themselves aren't actually beautiful - what about the word itself? What *about* the word itself? It's a compound word composed of butter and fly.  It's hard to imagine anything nice from a block of butter and a buzzing housefly - besides maybe some expired butter with flies crawling around it, but I doubt that strikes too many people as beautiful.
