Fort Wars Almost Lagfree

January 28th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

After a few hours work, I’ve managed to create a single trigger (opposed to the original 30) that controlled every single spawn line.   Originally, each spawnline had its own constantly looping function, and each player had his/her own set.   You’d have around 30*Players number of looping triggers every moment.

Now I managed to combine them all, so you have only 1*Players, a maximum of 8 at any given time on an 8 player map.     This should drastically reduce the lag of any Fort Wars game.

Hopefully I finish 3.1 soon and release. :D

Boy's Scream Kills Hundred of Chickens...

January 25th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Article: Boy’s Screaming Kills Chickens

That’s just one of the weirdest things I’ve read in a long time.   Apparently, a dog scared a boy, who in turn screamed and scared hundreds of chickens to death.   Sounds like something right off of Jelly Pickle.

Fort Wars 3.1 Fixed!

January 23rd, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Tried a few more times to fix what I had already.   First game went well until 20 minute mark and it synced out.   The rest of the games synced out within 10 minutes.   I went through and redid all the changes from 3.0 onward again.   So far no problems - but that’s a serious lost of time wasted on the damn problem. :(

Fort Wars 3.1 Out of Sync

January 21st, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Everything works fine in single player and 1v1.   File is short, instructions are brand new, tons of new features.. but always out of sync.   Unfortunately can’t find what exactly is causing this.   I’m afraid I’m going to have to start from 3.0 again and edit from there.   Wish me luck!

kb Commands in AOE3

January 14th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

I’ve just took some time to actually try my hand at learning kb Commands.   Surprisingly it isn’t that hard (it looks confusing and there are close to no resources or references for it), and opens a whole new set of possibilities for scripting.   Some guy named TwentyOneScore found these years ago for Age of Mythology, but from what I saw, it seems like no one bothered to take up on his findings.   Very sad that this has remained buried for so long - like hidden treasure :p

Programming

January 14th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Random Stuff | #
My first shot at anything even close to programming started with Age of Empires III in Random Map Scripting of November 2005.   I didn't try any other languages until around summer of 2006, when, out of boredom from being one-handed due to a broken right wrist, I taught myself web design and programming (including coding this website from scratch).   Since then, I've learned much more programming and continue to do so.

What do I use to program? No fancy programs here (you otherwise aren't writing your own code and technically NOT programming!)... I only use Notepad2; it is basically the Notepad included on all Windows computer, with highlighting to make code easier to read.   Very nice when you are editing files with over 5000 lines of code :p Many thanks to Elpea and Matei for recommending it to me.

Currently I'm fluent in:

  • Age of Empires III
    • Random Map Scripting (XS)
      • (XS) Random Map Scripting, 2005-2006
      • XS Trigger Injection, 2006
      • XS Knowledge Base Querying, January 2007

Things to Do

January 11th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in 42 | #
Bored? Need something to do? Just want to burn time? These are some "interesting" sites to check out... Feel free to send me more links to add!
Aninote.com - Type a name into the addresses it gives you on the site and it'll display that name in the animation. Pretty neat. Here's an example with wow in the address: wow.youaremighty.com
Boxhead 2Play - Addicting 2-player stickman shooter game to kill time at school.

Google Fight

January 11th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Here’s a funny site I just came across.   Basically it lets you enter two search phrases to compare and a little animation plays as if the two are duking it out.   The winner is the search phrase that gets the most hits on Google.   Also a nice way to see what site is more popular :P

        Example: Llama VS Potato

        Nooooooooo! The potato won! :O

Some Random Story

January 7th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Stories | #
         This is a true story...

So there was a short lil' guy named Bob and this tiny little  kit-cat named Tom.   Tom was hungry one day and Bob didn't have any  water.   Tom begged for food, but Bob said  no so the tiny cat scratched him.   Bob tried to call for help, but accidentally swallowed his hat.

A huge ugly dog named Jack came along, but his real name was Bob.   Bob tried to feed the dog to Tom the lil' cat, but Jackbob tried to scare the cat.   Bob then became angry and Tom got  angry too.   Tom didn't know why he was angry  so he started chasing Bob around, but Bob was angry that Tom was angry because he was angry, so he started chasing Jackbob the dog.

The Agenda...

January 6th, 2007 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Bah.. two days left of break - so much to do :(

Quick list:

- Update Fort Wars (patch due any time + Aztec sucks, need to announce ladder etc)

- Castle Blood (Balances, ladder announce etc)

- Then I got my own homework from school to worry about

- Some guys want me to make a UDaPreyMap - sounds pretty intresting but….

- Finally also setting up an AOM Design Library for Paperfriend - which just finalized not too long ago but still needs some adjusting

Meh - too much for one person.   Elpea claims to be able to help playtest UDaPrey but… maybe someone should make the map first :p

Coffee

December 28th, 2006 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #
Just bored here while the rest of the family is napping after the long drive.   My sister next to me was trying to drink a cup of coffee but spat it back out after the first sip.   Then she goes again to try and drink it, only to spit it back out not much later.

I don't know why she bothers.   Coffee is  so disgusting.   It's this brown, murky substance that, had it been anywhere else besides a cup that said "Drink", no one would consider drinking.   It doesn't taste or smell good, and it certainly doesn't look appealing.   People try to deny this, but notice that people who drink it often have it mixed heavily with sugar or cream -  to hide the fact that it's so nasty.

Some people claim that they need the coffee to wake up; they need the caffeine.   So wait, let me get this straight.   They drink the coffee for the caffeine - which makes them high and wide awake.   Wouldn't that be the same as taking drugs? So drinking coffee is like taking drugs - makes you high and lets you "wake up" (although after it wears off, you feel dead-tired).   Why not just take a couple of caffeine pills every morning...   much cheaper too.

Bleh - you won't ever find me drinking coffee! :p

Off for the Winter...

December 27th, 2006 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Winter break now obviously - can’t stay home the whole two weeks. :-/   I’m going to be off again - will probably be back Tuesday or Wednesday next week.   I have no clue where I’m going - just another random road trip.   Hopefully not as boring as the last.

Fort Wars Ladder

December 24th, 2006 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

It turns out Elpea’s old ladder for Fort Wars has ALWAYS worked.   We were working on an XML version for NOTHING. :( All we needed was to add &sFlags=0 to the address we were using. Argh!

Now splitting it so that we have an expansion and non-expansion version… Would be perfect to release on Christmas XD

House with Christmas Lights

December 22nd, 2006 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Hello all - merry christmas!

Here’s just something you have to have seen at least once, if you haven’t already.   I found it about a year ago - still very cool.

House Lights Synced with Music

Someone synced a ton of christmas lights on there house with “Wizards in Winter” music in the background.   I believe his name was Carson Williams and he does it every year.   Course the music is on radio station, not speakers (or he’d be hated by his neighbors lol ).

Yes it’s real - not video-editted or anything.   Heck it was on the news - here’s a snopes article  (they look into “urban legends”) if you need all the proof.

If you haven’t seen this yet - shame on you! Enjoy!

Learning to web design from the ground up...

This site was my first real attempt ever at coding a website from scratch. I started this with absolutely no clue as to what I was doing, and to be honest, I still don't really know what I'm doing.
For those wondering, I use nothing but a simple text editor to type all my code - type the code, yes. You really can't "program" your site if you're using a click-and-drag interface. At most, I'd use Notepad2, which is the same as Notepad on Windows except with highlighting. Anything extra is cumbersome.
The following are tutorial and resource sites in the order I found them. This site wouldn't be here if I didn't manage to find these. If you're just starting web design, you might want to bookmark a few of these.  Once you're done with those and want to learn actual programming...[More]

Figured Out XML Parsing!

December 5th, 2006 | Posted by pftq in Blabberbox | #

Woot! Finally figured out how to parse XML with PHP.   Hopefully the Fort Wars ranking system (power rating/cuetech/whatever) will be up pretty soon! Big thanks to Elpea for helping me out here - and letting me bug him to death and figure this out. :p

For starters, I’ve set up an easier to read version of Ensemble Studios played games feeds: Game List

Dynamic too! Just change the number in the URL.
